Our history

Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners was formed in 2014 on the foundations of extensive existing collaborations between the eight founding partners and from recognition of international research in education and clinical health around academic health science centres.

Our founding partners consist of four hospital and health services, two universities and two medical research institutes. While we are based in south-east Queensland, the partners provide state wide health services to five million people across Queensland.

The founding partners are:  Metro North Hospital and Health Service, Metro South Hospital and Health Service, Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service, Mater Misericordiae Ltd, The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Translational Research Institute and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.

Our name

The inclusion of ‘Diamantina’ in our name is a tribute to Queensland pioneer, Lady Diamantina Bowen. Lady Bowen cared for the sick, injured and underprivileged in Brisbane and Queensland during the 1800s.

The name ‘Diamantina’ has continued to be used in her honour throughout the history of health care in Queensland. We also feel her dedication and passion for improving health in the community accurately reflects the goals of our partnership.
